Speak Love. Speak Life. Matthew 5:21-22
21. You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER’ and ‘Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.’
22. “but I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘You-good-for-nothing,’ shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell. (NASB)
There are words of life, and words of death. There is the righteous anger over injustice and the robbery of God’s glory and there is the kind of anger that we bottle up and let the sun set on (Ephesians 4:26, James 1:19-21).
26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil.
19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
Perhaps it is idealistic to try to think and pray every time we open our mouths, but then again, we usually have enough time to think up witty and cutting retorts to statements we have already deemed stupid.
Our Lord is the savior of mankind. He is the Life Giver. He wills that His children be those who impart Life with every word. This passage indicates that we have great power in our words. The Lord Jesus warns us that the words that flow out of our angry hearts can do dreadful damage to others who are just as equally created in the image of God as we.
Let us not merely speak of Jesus, let us speak like Jesus. Speak words of Love. Speak words of Life.
